Default Engine removal process

Getting to the point to remove the old engine.

What are all the things I need to do to remove it? Can I remove
the engine and the ST-10 tranny together? Or do I separate them?

Car has stock exhaust y pipe too.

Thx.

Adam,

Are you keeping the same exhaust manifolds?

I believe with your, it's better to keep the transmission with the engine. IF it was an automatic, I'd say leave it.

I'm not sure if this is helpful or not, but on the 78 I pulled both. I first pulled the rad and shroud together. There was tons of room after they were out.

Wow, you were busy. I guess I know what you were itching to do on CHristmas...

I presume the distributor comes out for ease of removal.
All the wires come off and get labeled.
Are there other things I need to remove first, accessories ?

Yep, dist out, tranny lines (I forgot those). fuel lines... I see that you are in Allen, I'm just up the road. I may be able to swing by if you want to take a look and discuss it.

do yourself a favor and run down to Barnes & Noble, or any other big bookstore, and buy the booklet "How to Rebuild Your Small Block Chevy." It gives advice and how-to's for pulling engines. I used it the first time I ever pulled an engine and it went like clockwork. Best money I have spent on this kind of job.

> GO buy a book....

Oh, I've got that book but I guess I didn't read that section. I bought a short block to rebuild...

Hey Chris; Thanks for the offer. I probably will do this in February (in China next week.) You'll have to stop by when it happens.

Thx.

Hey Adam,

I pulled the engine and my ST-10 tranny out together. I'm in Richardson and would be glad to assist someday. I have an engine hoist you can borrow if you want.

Adam,

With all the help, you might be able to pull the original and drop the new motor in the same day - if you have everything and are ready....

Are you planning on doing anything in the engine compartment?

If need be, I could free up some room (LOL) and you can use the barn if you want. Let me know.

Thanks Tim;

Yes I've got some engine bay work. The AC box has a hole and needs to be resealed. The AC plenum on the side of the car needs to be sealed too.
I was getting ac blowing out the side vents.

That plus general cleanup from a radiator that sprung a leak.

Thanks.

Sounds like there is a group of us that can help out. Let me know. I also have access to a hoist and an extra jack or 2.

If you have an auto, and pull them at the same time...

Drain the ATF first! If not, tail shaft gets loose at a steap angle and dumps all over the place.

Real easy if you pull them at the same time, no need to work on bellhousing bolts from odd angles!

You will need a load leveler for the cherry picker. I've got the same one in picture above... bent the threaded rod on mine with the last lift.
