Anyone in the Nashville TN area is welcome to use my booth for free if you can schedule around my current work. We normally dont work on Sundays so that would be a good time.
Your also welcome to use any of our paint guns, we have a large assortment of Sharps (high and low end) and Sata's.
Wow, that's an awesome offer. I may be bringing my Vette down to TN when it's stripped and ready for paint.
Test your gun over and over with water in the tank. There is NOTHING worse than laying down a great new coat of clear, and then having clear seep out of a bad seal under tank and drip all over the fender...making that weepy look. AHHHH....I was SOOO pissed.
Don't put water in your gun. If you want to test for leaks, use thinner. Water and paint don't mix.

It worked fine for me, and I didn't use the gun before cleaning it again after the test, and I always shoot test patterns. Thinner is safer but I used what I had handy.
Yeah, I'd love to find a similar adult-ed typr class, but I've searched everywhere int eh Detroit and I can't find anything. No one in the Great Lakes region knows of anything either (including those folks who have also looked). I mean, in Detroit you'd epect there to be LOTS of these types of classes, but no luck. Day-um!
There is a Adult Ed center in Wayne,MI. They have a paint class, the name slips my mind right now, but I will find it for you.

Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor (right across the street from St. Joes Hospital) has extensive automotive facilities and course offerings. Courses dedicated to refinishing and even classic car restoration are available.
Winter classes started over a week ago so it may be too late for that, but you may want to keep in mind for future reference.
I haven't taken any courses there due to typical problems with finding the time. However they have a nice car show there during the summer during which they have opened up the shops for tours. I went through and it looked pretty good. I'm still considering taking some classes because I work about a mile or two away from there.
I self-taught myself to paint and have done six or so cars over the years but I'm sure there are many improvements I could make with a little pro teaching/advice.
I'll be painting my 72 again this summer so maybe the time has come.
The class description for the basic class states it is for experienced painters. How much experience was necessary? How much did you have going in?

I just attended a House of Kolor two-day training class in Grand Prairie Texas on January 11th and 12th. It was a screaming good deal for just $100. (Price just increased to $150 for 2007) The class was geared toward the use of House of Kolor custom paint instead of typical jobber paint but the hands on experience is very useful for any type of paintwork you have planned. The price included a two night stay at the Wyndham Hotel, a knowledgeable/motivated instructor, a mailbox that is used as the canvas for your paint project, all chemicals, and use of a TOP NOTCH lab/paint facility.
The location is excellent. Your family could spend two days at Six Flags over Texas while you attend class.
My only experience prior to this class was the prep and painting of my '80 Corvette.
There were only 7 students in the HOK basic class that I attended. Two of those 7 people had never sprayed ANY paint before the class and the rest of us were just "hobby painters".
Make sure your air compressor is outside the booth/garage where your painting.
Think of your garage as a giant combustion chamber and your compressor motor, fridge motor etc as a big spark plug..you get the idea.
I'm always nervous when spraying in my home garage, I try and keep the fog to a minimum and do my final paint in a booth.

I designed a air filtration system using a few box fans, air buffers, and fresh air vents. It was middle of January, but the temp stayed in the 70's.
Hot rod magazine has an entire issue out dedicated to painting. Its very good, you can find all the same info in here and on several web sites, but for 4 dollars it s worth picking up to have all the info in one place.

I'd love to hear some things that you've done that worked real well that might not be that obvious. I'm more interested in some tips that worked really well for you.
THANKS!!!
Not sure if there's anything in here that will help, but here's a thread I posted after I painted my vette. Let me know if I can help.
Good luck!
