Default '71 speedo cable

can I disconnect the speedometer cable without removing the dash?
Is it a clip or screw version?
How is it connected to the transmision (4 speed)?

Please help!

It's a clip. You push down the clip on the back of the speedo and pull the cable loose. You have to contort a bit to get your hand in there. It screws onto the transmission.

Thanks guys,
one question left.
Is there a grommet or something similar in the firewall where I can pull the cable out? Any other precautions?
It has been melted by the exhaust pipe and must be renewed.

Yes, you can see it about in the middle of this picture just behind the dipstick. Comes out at a right angle to the firewall and goes across to pass side then down to the tranny.
