I have a 454 in a 72-Corvette. Donīt believe this is the original engine. The motor is stamped above the valve cover with "TK04XAA8".
Can anybody decode this?
Thanks for quick answer.
It is really a "0", may be "O", but definitely no "D".
I read in another forum that the stamping on this position over the valve cover says to which car the engine was mated and on which date. It is stamped there and not casted. As far as I found out already is that the "T" at the beginning might mean Tonawanda plant or so. The "K" might mean November (11th letter in the alphabet), 04 may be 4th (November).
The motor also has casted "Pass High Perf" behind the timing gears and also above the oil filter.
Don´t know how to post pictures, sorry.

When you say above the valve cover are you meaning in front of the valve cover/head on a flat pad?
For reference, my 72 has the original engine with T1I0I CSR stamped
in front of the VIN. The Corvette 1968-1982 Restoration Guide decodes the stampings as:
first letter = Plant - T-Towanda, V-Flint
four numbers = mmdd of assembly (the letter I was often used to make up for a shortage of ones).
three letters identifying the engine
So, mine translates to T=Towanda 1I=November 0I=01 CSR=454/270 1972 model year
This makes sense since my car was built on or around December 13th, 1971.
Hope that helps.

Reason: spelling
You might want to relook at your numbers again. T = Towanda plant, K = ?, the next nubmers are generally month and day engine is assembled. 04 = April.... the AA8 might really be AAS, which would call out a 1973 chevy truck, 427, 230 HP, manual transmission. Clean off the area real good, if youi haven't already. You can google "chevy engine suffix codes" and you will bring up alot of information on engines and what car they were placed in.....Hope this helps...
