Default dumb distributor removal question

If I make a mark on the housing in relation to the intake and then again the rotor in relation to the housing, assuming I don't rotate the engine, I should be able to drop the distributor back in the exact same postion right? My dumb self didnt' think to check the timing on my engine before I pulled all the things off the engine for detailing. I now want to take the intake off to clean and paint. I'm not about to put everything back to running condition just to check the timing when Iv'e got a lot more cleaining and painting to do.

the rotor will rotate 1/8 turn or so, as it drops down in the hole and the gears mesh. So when you drop the dist. back in, you must have the rotor a notch or so COUNTERclockwise from where you actually want it to be.

When it hits bottom and the dist. is flush with the intake manifold, then you will see the rotor is right where you want it to be.

Thanks San Diego Paul, I knew it would rotate as it came out, but I figured as long as I got it back in the exact same position, I was OK. I could and know how to set it on TDC compression before I pull the distributor which would get me close on reinstallation, but I still don't know what exactly the timing is set at
