Default Shift problem on 4spd

78 L48 4spd.
Hard to shift into gear after transmission is in neutral. Engine at 900 RPM, when waiting at a stop light with cluch out(engaged) and trans in nuetral, just can not get it into gear untill the trans slows ??. What do you think is wrong hear.

Clutch not disengaging. Check the adjustment of the linkage.

Come back and let us know if it is or is not the clutch. I intermittently have the same problem and it is not the clutch. Not exactly sure what is my problem but I have been given some ideas... (need to search old threads)

I have had trouble with cluch pedel location, to high 1.5" to 2" over brake peddle location and have tried to adjust cluch to lower peddle location.
Will adjust cluch to factory spec. and let you know whats up, 10 degree and foot of snow around here, may take two weeks to get the car out with all the salt and sand on the roads.

If the clutch adjust os OK, try to readjust the shifter linkage. If not adjusted correctly, it will get stuck in the neutral gate.

If you have power brakes, the brake pedal is lower than the clutch pedal from the factory.

Oh, I did not know that. I was thinking the adjustment was wrong or the peddle stop is bent.

Is it a problem just putting it in first gear or any gear? Also does it get any better once the transmission has warmed up a bit? Could just be the synchros being difficult or maybe you've got the wrong kind of lube in it. I know mine is really tough to get into first gear until the fluid warms up, but then it's fine.

I had the trany fluid changed at a small local chevy dealer. If I have the cluch in for about 5 seconds I can shift into any gear, but if I am in nuetral and put the cluch in I can not get into any gear for about 5 seconds. Sounds funny, but the first thing I will do when the temp. goes up around here is change the oil myself.

Did it shift OK before the fluid change? Maybe they used 30 weight instead of 90 weight lube.

Same problem before the oil change, but I will check the oil when it warms up around here.
