Default Tranny removal- tilt engine

1980 L48 Auto

When I tilt my engine back to get access to the top bolts of the trans- do I need to loosen the engine mount bolts or do the mounts just flex- they are the rubber ones?

They flex. I run solid mounts and when I drop the tranny I quickly install my poly mounts and just let the tranny droop down and the mounts flex enough.
I do not loosen the mounts

They do flex but that's a good way to ensure they will weaken from the stress, and break later down the road. Be safe, and unbolt the mounts from the frame.

They will flex enough. Make sure that you support the engine though, especially once you unbolt the tranny. If you let it tip back too far, you can damage the fan, shroud or the elbow between the block and the oil pressure sender. The latter will produce a truly spectacular oil leak. I also would recomend removing the distributor for the same reasons.

but you dont have to worry about hurting your mounts, and removing the dist. is a real good idea, especialy if its an hei

I tore a pair of mounts for a Dodge motor I was changing the trans on because the motor tilted back too far for the new rubber.
