Default Made some progress today

Got the rest of the interior torn out today along with the steering column. Going to clean and reattach all the duct work and check all the wires. Decided to replace the heater core while I was at it. What is the best heater/ac gasket set to get for the 77 with ac Hope to have the interior finished by the end of March. The steering column is going to be a challenge to rebuild but I will take my time. Gotta take the whole colum down for just a plastic shroud sheeesh. Before I took the column out I checked the tilt and she is nice and tight.

Can you post a picture of the firewall with none of that stuff in there? I'm thinking about pulling it all out to clean things up.

Nice progress.
I bought mY complete AC/Heater box gasket kit Corvette America. I was really impressed. Included everything, even the vent gasket strips for the dash vents. I think it was around $45. Keep the pics coming.

Great shot of the interior, but did you get any pics of the engine side?

Okay thanks. Since I no longer use the A/C I'm thinking of removing the A/C and heater core, and fabbing a custom plate to cover the hole. I mat in turn make it into a location for an ECU for mt LT1 setup, and it'd be a great place for a relay hub with relays for fans and lights.

Wonder how much that steering column support weighs...

Looking good.

Since your gonna' pull the column apart anyway, I'd pull the tilt bowl and re-loctite the screws, and make sure the torque is where it's supposed to be. It's a PITA to have to go back in something 6 months after you've just been there. Just my $.02

Do those screws come loose easily? I've never really thought of getting in there and checking them.

SpanishSilver I am in the process of replacing my heater core too. I have a question about the actual reomoval of the heater box it self. I have removed one screw on the top rright, one screw bottom right, one screw bottom left, and a nut from the engine compartment for the stud on the top left. The box is loose but it is hung up I think on the stud. It pivots on the stud. The nut I removed in the engine compartment was located at the top right corner of the enclosure. It just feels like it is hung on that stud. Was your hard coming out? Any suggestions?

I had to cut the hoses. Taking it out I bent the metal tubes and had to use a sawzall. Make sure all the rubber hose is off and it should slide right out.

The hoses were never connected to the heater core. The box came out late yesterday. The firewall insulation was the only thing holding it tight. Now I can repair the hole that I discovered months ago. The previous owner said the interior was always very hot. After seeing the hole in the evaporator enclosure hole next to the exhuast manifold I can understand why the interior was extremely hot. He had the heat off exhuast coming into the heater box. I plan to patch it today using fiberglass. I cannot understand how the hole was created unless it was done when they bebuilt the motor. Originally I thought it was burnt through from the manifold, but now I believe it some how was broken through with something massive. It is hard to tell what has happened to these car after thirty plus years.

My evaporator box also had a hole right beside the #8 exhaust tube. I figure it must have happened when the engine was rebuilt before I bought the car. If I could download the pics from my camera, I could post some pics of my progress from this weekend, painting and detailing the engine compartment. My computer is so old, the photo program won't run on it.

Did you pull your engine to paint/detail the engine compartment? After the dash is done I plan to paint the engine compartment.

I have laid one layer of fiberglass on that hole today. I think it will turn out good when I am finished.

Alright ya got the core out. That firewall insulation looks in fine shape. Make sure you buy a GM core here is a link to one of my posts
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1605439
to compare aftermarket and the original GM core. GM parts direct has NOS cores for 69.99.

Don't skimp...buy the GM. You'll regret it about a year from now if you don't.
