Default 75 Engine dies - Condenser?

After running my car for the first time in a few months the engine dies while braking at the bottom of a hill and then failed to re-start. I immediately checked for fuel in the carb and all was well there. Afer about three minutes the car started again, but the same happened a few minutes later. I waggled a few wires around the distributer and the wire fell off the condenser. Possibly coincidentally, the car then started. Two questions. Could this have been a faulty condenser going short circuit when hot, secondly, what does it do anyway given that the car runs without it and it has HEI and not points, which is what I thought a condenser was across anyway.
Any thoughts.

I ran into a very similar problem and it turned out to be the ignition module.

Jud,
Do the 75's have a noise filter cap on the HEI, or is he talking about a tach filter going to ground?

I not sure what he's reffering to, Bird. Anyway, it shouldn't cause the engine to shut down.

If a tach filter went to ground, it will kill the primary to the coil.

Rob,
Just where exactly was this piece connected to on your dizzy? Did it plug into the cap on the outer left side?

Check to make sure the wires going into the hei distributor still have their locking tabs on them. Mine were broke off and when the wires come loose (like when drag racing a v6 accord that kicked my *** ) it dies..

Check the gas tank for water sitting in the bottom under the fuel.

Did it look like this, see photo. If it did then your tach may not be working anymore or very well. This is the tach filter that is attached to the intake manifold.
