It's finally alive!
I was chasing a no spark condition on and off for some time... I replaced the cam and tried to start it, it only backfired and I found out the ignition module was toast. I then replaced all distributor components and couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting spark. It turned out to be the new NAPA wiring from the module and plugs into the coil had the TACH and BAT wires backwards in the plug.
It ran for 20 minutes at 2000 rpm, temp was a little high but came down a bit after tuning. I got 30 degrees total timing at 3400 rpm.
I blipped the throttle a few times and it wasn't very responsive, then the rpm's started to rise and I shut it off and it dieseled a little then died. I guess a little more tuning is in order, but it finally started.
I told my wife I wouldn't buy any more parts until it started... time to break out the catalogs.
Nothing like sweet success. Congrats. Some things to ponder about the hi temps and RPM's rising. Could be the infamous vacuum leak causing a lean condition. Might also be causing the dieseling. As you probably already know the 30* total timing at 3400 RPM indicates you're not getting enough advance. Most agree you should be about 36* at 2500 RPM with the vacuum advance disconnected and the hose plugged.
