Sounds like you've got a late model Vette/engine with the dist. under the water pump. In any event, a water pump can go at any time, especially the cheaper after market ones. Try a Delco this time.
You get what you pay for on those cheapie's... But on the other hand any w/p can go out at any time with no warning. Not so much on a good one though!! What is the coolant condition? that will make a difference.

My original pump lasted 20 years and about 50,000 miles. I've had 2 since then and I'm now at 70k. Just get a lifetime one so it can be free after that. Delco is building more & more stuff in Mexico [ batterys are now crap, use to be the best] so you even have to watch them now.
There are new, and there are rebuilt water pumps.
As stated coolant/lube plays a factor.
Also belt tightness/overtightness
Also other pumps/accessories that might share
a pulley or belt with the pump, can be too tight.
A/C belt can put stress on pump if pulley is shared.
Is yours a new vet with surpentine?(shouldn't effect pump)
Buy a new AC Delco and keep proper coolant with
lube properties.
Yes a low milage pump can fail alittle(drips)
or alot (gushes) I have experience with that
