Default steering box question

What is the purpose of the steering cylinder and control valve? Every other vehicle I've owned or looked at, has only a steering box. I guess what i'm trying to get at is, why the extra stuff?

Default older design

If you look in the corvette catalogs it was carried from the earlier models to the c3. It was part of that corporate mentality we have been making them that way for twenty years. In fact they skipped regular power steering sectors [when they did change] and went right to rack and pinon they were so far behind. Fresher thinking finally came along.

The steering on our Vettes is more like tractor hydraulics. Control valve ports fluid to one side or the other.

It was carried over from earlier days.

The newer steering boxes have the control valve and cylinder inside the box. More compact, less parts and hoses to deal with.

It's just a 1950s design that was used because it was cheap and available. Spend some time with trucks up to the 1980s or older cars, and you'll see it a lot.
