I understand that each of these flex plates is different in diameter, the 168 tooth being the larger. How do you know which one shoud be used in a given application? I presume that it's related to the tranny and torque converter rather than the engine, but there doesn't seem to be any consistency.

Anyone know which one was used when? I need to figure out what's wrong with the starter on the 73 (TH400) and I'd like to verify that it's the right one.

168T ... assume it's for your L48 ... so specify it's for sbc 350 ... BBC454 & sbc 400 are different.
Whats wrong with your starter? could be nothing to do with the flex plate. neil.
You're right, it may have nothing to do with the starter.
When you engage the starter, it makes a horrible, metalic clanking and ringing sound. One of the obvios checks was to see if the correct starter and flex plate were used.
