Well, for the best and cleanest look, get a set us custom length plug wires. They come unterminated so you can route them and cut to length and then terminate them at the distributor cab.
Clean is under the manifolds to the back and then up to the cap.
Also, you can get a wire loom that bolts to the valve cover bolts and the wires go straight up into the loom, and along the valve cover to the back where they route to the distributor.
I am thinking behind the manifold. What is the best way to keep the wires from melting?
Just don't let them touch. Keep them from touching, and make sure you have good high quality set of wires with good insulation and you'll be good to go.
The stock wires were routed thru V shaped chanels against the block under the exhaust manifolds. Some guys like them, but I always thought it sucked. I am rerouting mine as short as possible and thru guides along the outside of the valve covers

And what a pain. The best way to change wires when there in stock form is to take off the block shields. Which means on the right side removel of the starter first..............you get the picture.
Yeh, about the only satisfactory way I have found is using a set of hotrod MOROSO wire support clips.....I even modded my set when going to the center bolt valver covers they still fit and work fine....
