If you look at this thread, my receipt posted is from a shop in the Milwaukee area, Allis Machine and they do quality work. Probably an a little over an hour and 15 minutes from you.

I used Opal Engineering in Streamwood a number of years ago for my
'71 LT-1. They machined the block +.030, decked it (leaving the pad stamp alone for #'s matching purposes, align honed, balanced and blueprinted rotating assembly, and shaved the heads.
The quality and service was tops.

Thanks Rob.... Interestingly, I did get another name in West Allis... AMS (Steve Johnson). Sounds good but pricey. I wll give your guy a call today. Can I use you as a ref?

Hard to read, but are those SpeedPro L2256 forged pistons. Did you consider the hypereutectics as well? Shooting for a 9.75 static CR with 65cc heads...considering the KB156s.

Thanks
Jim

Old school race engine builder. Great owner always willing to show and tell. Very resonable prices. A little slow, but job done RIGHT!
Machine shop & speed shop that machined my 406 block.
Dixon Automotive (847) 244-2235 in Gurnee IL. Ask for Ray...tell him Eddie sent ya.

Jim,

I have driven by AMS, but never dealt with them. They are probably a little more up on the latest technology on making HP. Allis is just a good basic machine shop.

Yes I used Speed Pro forged pistons L2256F40. cast pistons are just not as good and I figured if I was going to rebuild it, do it right. As I recall we are just under 10:1 with the flat top Speed Pro pistons with a 62CC head. I'm not sure they will remember this engine they did for me as it was earlier last year.

Those of you from up around Chicago, do you know if Pro-Motor Engineering is still in business?

Had a GT-1 race motor build by them many years ago. They weren't cheap, but build one heck of an engine.

Oh yeah...another one I forgot about. Fast Times Motorworks in Morton Grove. Builds NHRA etc monster motors. Expensive YES... but top notch HP builds. They machined Monty's twin turbo 1000HP 427 SB.

I took a stock four bolt main block, eagle crank, pistons, cam to them. I need the block bored and clearanced for a 383. I wasnt going to have it balanced but Skipper(?) convinced me to balance it and buy new eagle rods. He gave me the option to buy the parts of have him get them. I was able get all the parts cheaper and he had no problem using them as long as they were new. I have used them on a couple over the years and nothing but good luck with them.

If you are anywhere near Woodstock, Speed Freak Racing Engines does fantastic work. One guy show so about 4 to 8 weeks turn around. Great prices on parts and top notch work. Ed (owner / op) 815-363-9885.
