Recently, I have had an overcharging problem in my 79 L-82. I took my alternator down to Discount Auto Parts, and had it tested on their computer tester, and showed that it was good.....I replaced the battery, but the system is STILL overcharging.
Sitting at a stop light, it runs at the normal 14-15 volts, but as soon as I take off, it goes up to 18+ volts, the battery starts to smell and burn my eyes...
What else can I look for, or what tests can I run ?
In first thought, I would think that the voltage regulator is bad, but the alternator tested out ok....is there another external voltage regulator, or only internal in the alternator ?
Sounds like regulator must be bad, but the alternator would still be charging, and that is all they would have tested. I think you need to replace/rebuild the alternator to get rid of the problem.
