I got some wires from PepBOys with lifetime warranty last year and took them back b/c one had a chunk of rubber missing and was arcing. Now the new ones (the same plug) is getting greyish in the same area, (when I installed the new ones I made sure it would be as far away as I could from exhaust manifold), so I am heading down the same path. I can just keep exchaning them or buy someone else's wires, but just want a quick fix.
What can I fasten / attach to the plug boot to cut down the heat ? I am looking for something that I can pickup at the local auto parts store, not some some special material that you can only get if you work for Pratt & Whitney or something
thanks
Re: How to prevent plug wires from cooking? (yosshimura)
Yoss,
You can buy a set of 8 Boot Guards to over the boots and part of the wire. Or, you could get Accel Extreme 9000 Wires which take the heat real well. I use Taylors '409' Wire Set , 10mm, with Boot Guards. I have headers and i have had no problems with frying the wires or boots.
Re: How to prevent plug wires from cooking? (yosshimura)
yosshimura,
Couple of questions. Are you running headers? and are you using the original routing?
Headers can be a real problem and will need the special heat boots to help out. If you are running the wires over the top means that they have to run through the headers/exhaust manifold. If they are run the original route, from the bottom, they avoid the headers/exhaust manifold.
Re: How to prevent plug wires from cooking? (yosshimura)
I use the Moroso High Temp Sleeves. 2 to a pack for about $40 from Summit. Protects up to 2300 degrees. My MSD boots did what you described without the sleeves. I am running Hooker side pipes with Jet Hot coating.
Re: How to prevent plug wires from cooking? (Chuck Harmon)
i am using taylor brand spiro pro wires,i custom cut them and used 45 degree boots, running stock headers,no shielding. i am using the stock spark plug holder that is attached at the back of each head and has a rubber grommet that has 4 round holes side by side for the wires.this slides into the metal holder and was still available from my local chevy dealer as of last year.from there the wires go to their respective plugs and i use a plastic wire separator to help hold the wires. no problems in about 3k miles.
