Default Car gets stuck in reverse

Tha last two times i put my car into reverse it sid not want to come back out again. I had to keep playing with the shifter and moving it around for about 5 min before it would come out of reverse. I have no problems with any forward gears. What should i check first.

Put it up on stands and check the linkage.
Make sure all the clips are intact and that the bolt are tight.
Also check for other obstructions, wires etc.
Then check the adjustment of the throw for reverse.
This is a good start.

I've had similar problems with stuck reveres...How do you adjust the rods?? How do you know which way to go or is it totally just playing around until you hit a sweet spot on the shifter?

Thanks!

The GM Chassis Service Manual for your specific year gives a very good description of the procedure for adjusting the shifter linkage. Essentially, you put the shift lever in neutral, insert a home-made "locatiing gauge" (GM's phrase) into the slot and then adjust each of the three rods for that neutral detent. It takes about 30 minutes and is fairly simple. Spend the bucks on the reprinted manual and it will tell you tons about your car. We just did this on my friends 73 and it smoothed out his shifting considerably.

You need to make this tool, it slides in the bottom center of the shifter and keeps its center as you rig the shifter rods. I just loosen the adjustment nuts on all three shifter rods, slide the tool into the shifter, then tighten up the shifter rods. It should be good go. Also is a good time to check your shifter arm on the tranny. They should not have any forward or aft play while sitting in nuetral. If they get to much slop in them, it will make rigging the shifter almost impossible. lou
