Default Help Please Steering column

I started rebuilding my steering column and lost a part. The part I was holding was the preload spring that attaches to the centering sphere. I was holding it with needlenose pliers and it flew out of the pliers. Does anybody have this part number and is it really needed. Seems like it didnt do anything. I have a 77. I looked all over AIM and couldnt find it.

You won't find an internal component part like the spring in the AIM. That spring was installed into the steering column by Saginaw as part of manufacturing the full steering column assembly. GM used to service the spheres 7844652 (the spring may have been part of the kit) but they are no longer listed on GMPartsDirect.

The only place that I have found that lists the spring is Dr. Rebuild. It comes as part of a tilt sphere kit. 77-82 Shaft Pivot Centering Sphere and Spring #6521182
