What would the cheap gears be? I would think alloy would not be good. Then again I know nothing about tranz.
Thanks
Dave
I am stashing the matching 327 and m20 in favor of a 408.
Just my thoughts but if you are going to put a 408 in it then replace the 4 speed with a 5 speed T-5. It would cost the same or less than the RockCrusher and you would have an overdrive to boot.
Your car would be faster out of the hole and improved highway performance with the T-5 over the Rock Crusher.

GREAT, something else for me to think about. No just kidding you know how it is with all the different options. I would like to know about a t-5 (wtb and price). I would love to have an OD. I was thinking the 22 for hd reasons.
If you put a 408 with some real power in it the 408 will lay the T5 all over the ground if you drive it hard. They do not handle abuse and high HP very well.

As I recall, original gears were SAE 8XXX series alloy or some such rather uncommon material- a nickel or chrome-nickel alloy. This is a relatively strong material and also probably has better wear characteristics than an unpedigreed material.

You know Gordonm I just do not know for sure. I know that Norvall ran one behind his 600HP plus Big Block and it lived.
But I do know that I have killed a couple of M-22's in the past. Blew the cluster gear out of them. But I ran them pretty darn hard.
will this vette shop give you at least a short period warranty ??
A new richmond 4 speed is $1400.00 and you don't have to put up
with a 2.20 low first gear.

I work well with the guy and he has hooked me up on a lot of stuff including using tools and stuff. So I do trust him plus he does all the work on the cars for the place I work.
I am sure I could get a year out of him. I am going with a 408 from T&L which they dyno at 511/511. He suggested the M-20 would be the weakest link. I may add to the engine and just want to make sure the trans will hold up.

Those are good torque figures what rear gear do you have.
Not sure as to how much strength differance between the
super T-10 richmond and the M22 but you can get the richmond
with the close ratios between 2nd, 3rd and fourth with a 2.64 low gear.
2.64, 160,123,100. Panic has the richmond behind his 406/575 hp
engine he races it on mountain roads and has not had any problems.
maybe if you are going to pound on it at the drags with slicks it might
not hold up.

If you are going to abuse the M-22 you may want to get a steel mid-plate. The factory aluminum mid-plate is supposed to be a weakness when the traction/torque goes up.
