I donated a trim ring unintentionally while driving down the freeway this week. :(
In trying to find a replacement, I found 3 styles - stainless, chrome, and plastic w/chrome plating. I would assume the plastic w/ chrome is easy to differentiate, but how do you tell which ones you have to ensure a match?
Simple: Remove the trimring from the wheel and see if a magnet will stick to it. If it does, it's chrome plated steel. If it doesn't, it is stainless steel. :flag
The chrome ones are a little darker that the stainless. You could also use a magnet.
There is also 2 different s/s types. The orig tpe uses 3 clips on the back side. It also has more "lip" in front. The replacement rings are less expensive. They have a 360 deg retention device. They also set back into the wheel, unlike the factory type.
I will have to check, but I think mine had 4 clips. Let me get this straight - the originals have 3 clips and a wider lip or facing that borders the tire area and the aftermarket ones have a clp that is 360 degrees, fits deeper into the wheel with less lip (no jokes).
Curiosity Question - does one look better than the other? Does the S/S look less brilliant than the Chrome? What about Durability and staying in place.

Sorry, you are right, they have 4 clips, not 3.
I personally like the stainless rings. I bought a new set of repos (not the 4 clip models) & polished them with Mothers. They came out better than chrome. See Photo
I just got the SS trim rings from ZIP. They are slightly different than the original ones by the way the lip near the tire looks and also they have the 360 degree retainers as opposed to the 4 clips. I am very happy with my new ones, the quality seems good even though they are made in China. I like the way the 360 clips bring the ring closer to the tire.

Now I understand about the rims fitting closer into the wheels. This is due to the clip design evidently. I have seen some rims that have a crease or indentation around the edge - possible for smaller width wheels like Monte Carlo or Camaros, so as long as there is not a marked difference in the width of the 'lip' around the edges, I can go for the repros.
You can barely see the rim on the SS rings and only if you look really close. The "lip" is slightly different in the fact that the originals do have a small indention around the edge of the "lip" and the aftermarket ones don't. If you are not a numbers matching NCRS type the I recommend the SS rings. The aftermarkets won't win any Top Flight awards thats for sure.
Zip had a set of 4 SS's for $59 a while back if you ordered them over the internet, thats where I got mine.
