Lately, the idle speed on my '82 vette drops to where the engine almost stalls when I shift into reverse after starting her up in the morning. It would start at 1500-2000 rpm and drops to 450-500 rpm when I shift into reverse and nearly stalls. I'd have to give it some gas to prevent the stall. It's never done this in the past. What's causing this?

your timing is screwed up..........look to see if the shaft in the distributor is turning freely, look to see if the vacuum can is still connected and working properly...perhaps the hose going to the vacuum can became stretched or disconnected...start at the vacuum cannister
If I knew where you are located(North or South) or what type of fuel delivery system you have(Carb or F.I.) Or if you would PLEASE fill out your profile, you may get more responses!

I live in Northern Cali. It's an '82 so they only came with fuel injection.

same problem with my 82'. my vaccuum is all screwed up, i have to manually unplug/plug the vaccum line to open and shut the lights . When vaccuum is unplugged i need to give a lil more gas so it doesnt stall. my timing is also off and it does the same thing...check timing, should fix the problem.

Vacuum cannister? You mean the vacuum advance unit on the distributor? I don't think there's a vacuum advance unit on an '82 vette since it's controlled by the ECM. I'll check the timing anyway.

My headlights open and close ok so it's probably not the vacuum line.

You're right. No vacuum canister on these if stock. This is almost certainly something to do with your TBI system. Does it improve if you let it completely warm up first? It hasn't been that cold around here lately, but certainly cold enough so that it will take a little time to warm to operating temperature.

Yeah , the problem goes away when the engine is warm but it's never done this before even when I don't let it warm up. Could it be the IAC's aren't moving fast enough?
No idea. I'm not very familiar with the 82'; only that they share most of the CCC system with the 81's. I know that on 81's, until the computer receives a signal from the temperature sensor that the engine is at operating temperature, it will run full rich and with no spark advance. I would assume something very similar on the 82's. This could be exacerbated by the cool and wet conditions that we've had lately.
sorry i didn't read carefully enough and didn't realize it was an 82 ( not sure now i missed it).....your torque converter could also be dying
No problem. I was just checkin out your vette pics. Is your interior red? Your vette looks like mine except for the model year. I also have spinners on stock rims.
