Default Simple chassis question....

From the factory were the C3 chassis painted or just bare metal ??

Cannot see much paint on mine.........or as a throwaway car was the chassis butch enough to last the car out ??

I know from personal experience that in the 1950 and 60's chassis corrosion was not considered much on many cars.

The paint on my 1952 120 OTS and 1966 XKE are a token jesture !! The 120 chassis is only perfect where engine oil leak / splash got on it.

Best car for factory underseal that I have seen close up is my friends Volvo estate car. Looks like it would never rust.

Next question, if you are treating a chassis on the car - which do you prefer, underseal, a mixture of oil and grease or some other preparation ???

A THROWAWAY CAR!!!!
Yes they had chassis paint, they used an asphalt based paint until the 70's(give or take, I don't know the specifics), then good 'ol chassis black.
As for treatment now, provided your not going the NCRS route, the best is powder coating if you have the frame bare, but if the car is still together then clean it up good and use POR 15 on the areas that you can't get the rust out compleatly (pitted, frame pockets you can't get get a wire wheel in, etc) and paint the rest.

My '81 chassis has/had a very light coat of flat black paint (chassis paint). I'm pretty sure it was original as it still had the yellow chalk marks on it. A lot of places looked to be bare metal.
For protection I used POR15 on the parts I could get to. For the parts I couldn't get to I used clear Waxoyl (great stuff).
Best car I've seen for rust was a Triumph Spitfire. Think it was made to automatically recycle itself back to iron ore The best for longevity is my mums '79 Saab 900 turbo. Even being left outside in all weathers the chassis is still good, though the body is starting to go.

For those old enough to know what I am talking about - the rustiest car from the factory - as far as I have seen - was the late 40's to 50's Vauxhall Wyvern

Try and find one now - even at classic shows - all rusted away.

Default Rustiest Car

My vote would go to a Minnesota Ford Maverick, or an Upper Michigan Chevvy Vega.

A Buffalo,NY '59 Studebaker Lark; didn't take long for that thing to rust.
