Jim,
My fixture has threaded rod on the sides to "pin" the tranny and the piece of angle iron on the tail portion for support. It is an ugly duck looking thing but it works good.
I have never tried to install from the side. With my hoist and tilter it was at the max from the nose of the car. Could you sling something overhead? without the tilter it would have been impossible for me to install them. I used a poly mount and the aftermarket POS didn't line up- my son had to crawl under the car while I lowered the combo in place. trial fit everything first. Fiil the TC with ATF and lube the front seal with vasaline.
Thanks - that sounds like it should work. Where is the "balance" point on the TH400? Middle of pan?
Thanks
My old Sears floor jack has a 3/8-16 hole in center of the cup, and a recessed hole through a 2x6 about a foot long, just for bolting up for a tranny/engine pan....works like a charm.....honestly, having done this a brazillion times on all sorts of vechiklees I feel a strap is in the way, I"d rather just pay attension and balance the damn thing....I never put a converter in/out untill the rear tranny is tied to the cross member, just my habits....balances better without 60 lbs dangling at bad angle....
I think my only option is to install the engine + trans from the side, unless I decide NOT to remove the TH400. I don't have any issues with the TH400 except I want to change the seals and filter and thought it would be much easier with the trans out. And easier to install as a single unit. Maybe if I get my son, son-in-law, and neighbor, we can muscle it in from the side.
