Default Power window motor/ regulator question.

The power windows on my recently purchased '76 (late) did not work when I bought it. I took off the door panels and both motors were missing. I purchased new motors and gears. Yesterday I removed driver side regulator and installed motor and gear and reinstalled.(I also removed window glass to help me see inside door). I pushed button and I think it moved for a second and quit. (The motor won't move at all now.) I searched archives and have great suggestions to try tonight for electrical checks. One question that I found no info on is: With regulator removed from door and new motor installed on regulator, should the teeth on the gear of the motor mesh with the teeth on the regulator gear or merely be very close? The two gears just barely touch and do pass each other after motor installed on regulator before installed in door. The teeth do not engage each other prior to installation in door. Is this correct? I am wondering if new motor gears are wrong size. I have no originals to compare. Does motor gear only engage regulator gear when power is applied to motor?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The gears should mesh tightly, with or without power. Do you have the cover plate that supports the gear shaft? The motor gets it's ground from the door shell. Use a clip lead or other means to test the motor operation out of the door.

Cover plate

Cover plate
I am not sure.I'm at work and the car is at home. Don't the screws go through the plate into the motor housing. If plate was missing wouldn't there be no way to mount motor to regulator?

I just posted a couple of days ago about PW. I haven't had time to work with them but below is a response I got. Maybe you have a grounding issue...

I just happen to have in my shop a '76 that we just removed both window motors without removing the regulator. Can be done if the glass is at least 1/2 way up. A little prying and it's out.

P.S. make sure the motor is grounded good, it will not work without a ground.

The 3 bolts go through the cover plate, then through the regulator, then into the motor.

Also be sure the D shaped bushing is in the support plate, if not the motor will twist and the gear won't mesh properly

Thanks.
I found lots of good info in archives on electrical aspect. I will try it all before requesting more info. My main concern is the gears right now. I hate putting it all back together only to find out I have wrong parts.

so motor can be mounted even if mounting plate and bushing are missing? If so it sounds like they are missing. Can they be purchased at auto parts store or only through Eckler,s, etc...?

It can be mounted, but without the bearing in the cover for support, it won't mesh. Ecklers, other 'Vette parts vendors and 'Vette salvage yards will have them.

Thanks. I figured it was not an "Auto Zone" item. I will order them and wait. I hate when things are missing. It takes way longer to fix when you don't know what was there to begin with!
