Loosen the nut on the 'Z' shaft at the frame bracket. The nut is 9/16" and may have a lock tab over it if it is original or never dismantled. You can then shove the shaft up out of the bracket and then pull the 'Z' shaft off the ball pivet bolted to your block. You can just let the assembly hang there or tie it back away from your engine while you do the exchange.

I don't know if you have ever pulled an engine before but if not, spend the $$ and buy the book "How to Rebuild Your SB Chevy." It gives a detailed procedure with step-by-step instructions, including photos in many cases. It is so easy, even a Cave Man can do it!

I noticed this topic and I will need to pull my engine at a later date.

Is it best , or should I pull the engine with or without the transmission attached (auto). I need to rebuild the trani only at some point in time, and if that is the case can I pull it out and leave the engine in...

Use the Clutch BEFORE you pull the motor....
Leave the clutch connected untill everything elese is done, engine on a cherrypicker, engine jacked up above the motormounts, Transmission supported on a Jack. Then USE the clutch to seperate the engine/Transmission..... THEN remove the linkage!!!
