Default Vacumn modulator ???

Hey guys,

Just did some tranny work and was wondering about the vac modulator. The old one had the holding bracket angled towards the back of the tranny so it had some play in it. It looked wrong to me so when I put the new one in I turned it around and it seemed to fit better and tighter. Just took the car out for a test drive and the shift points are way too high. I also replaced some seals and installed a B&M shift kit. It is also about 20 degrees here today. Only went around the block once. Not sure if I need to turn the bracket, wait til it gets warmer and try again or what. Also these things are adjustable aren't they. Thanks for your help.

Some modulators are adjustable. There is a screw slot inside the vacuum connection. Adjust it a little at a time until you get the shift points where you want them. Remember whare you start and which way you turned it. Also check your kickdown cable and make sure it's relaxed until just before WOT.

If the adjustment thing fails, you may need to change governor weights/springs.

Got to thinking after I got to work and the vac line that came with the new modulator was in a tight fit. It may have kinked or colapsed under vacuum pressure. It is a red line modulator so from what I have read elsewhere I believe it should be adjustable. Will look into more tomorrow.

Anyone know about the modulator bracket? Should it be angled towards the front of the car with mod tight or towards the back of the car with mod loose???Thanks

Are you looking at the clamp that holds the modulator in? The "U" that fits the modulator has 2 little bumps that are supposed to rest on the lip of the modulator..

OK...It's official...I'm an idiot. Seems as though the tranny won't shift if you don't have enough fluid in it. I put the 5 quarts that the instructions said you needed back in but appearantly that was not enough. Had to add about another quart and a half. Shifts ok. Still need to rid eit a little and check again. Too damn cold to mess with it anymore today. Thanks all.
