Quadrajet choke question
The choke on my 78 is not hooked up (making morning starts a pain in the a$$) coming off the choke adj housing is what looks like a big vacume port, Is that what it is? Where does it hook up to? What runs these chokes?
Thanx for the help
Stretching my memory here, but some of the q-jets used heat tubes from the intake to control the choke, later on they went to the bi-metal coil & rod mechanism. Does yours have the original intake or carb?

its the original type carb, holley rebuilt, and it is sitting on an Edelbrock performer intake.
Your Performer should have a heat well on the passenger (right) side, with one screw hole. A bi-metal coil fits in there & the housing screws down over it. A rod would extend out of the housing and up to the choke butterfly, controlling it. I'm sure you get the parts to convert it.
You could have a 'Hot Air' choke, that would be a big **** looking thing on the right side with a big honking nipple on it. (kinda sounds like you described), if so the 2nd link is for you.
there is an 'S' shaped tube that goes from the port to the intake manifold.
then another tube from the manifold to the back of the air horn.
Vacuum draws filltered air from the back of the QJ air horn, down thru the tube to the intake manifold where it is heated and then drawn thru the choke assy, where it heats the spring. as the spring gets heated and expands, the choke opens.
Since you are not using a stock manifold, I would recommend using and electric choke. The conversion is relatively easy. I believe there are online papers covering this.
If you want, I can take a pic of the hot air tubes and how they are hooked up.

That is for the older qjets
The second design uses a heat tube that goes into where ratflinger described the exhaust crossover and screws onto your choke housing.
Also you can get an electric choke cover from an 1981 up q jet and convert to that.

Thank you Ratflinger,Gotnomojo, and Noonie. I looked at the picture from the Summit link Ratflinger posted and it is a hot air choke. It looks like tomorow I will be purchasing an electric choke kit.
Thanx all for your help
