Hello there, my name is John, and I am new to this awesome forum.
One of my upcoming projects will be installing a 630HP LS7 crate engine and 5-speed into a 1969 Stingray (Orig. 350/4-speed car). This is for one of my customers (father-n-law)
Go with the 6 speed and put in a 3.70 or 4.11 rear gear. It will be a rocket ship with decent cruising rpm.
I looked into a six-speed...but there is a problem with that. First of all the 6-speed is a huge tranny, and major mods would have to be done to the floor, as well as the shifter would not exit the stock location.
My customer does not want to car to be hacked up, as we have all the OG drivetrain still.
The 5-speed I am using bolt right in stock, uses the stock clutch linkage and the shifter is in the stock location.

The six-speed would of been SICK for sure !!!!

Yes the trans is huge and does require some mods. My brother in law is doing a 67 Resto mod with a 600HP LS7 and 6 speed. Major floor surgery was needed.
Very nice project indeed as I plan to follow your foot steps as well dropping in a modded LS2 or a stroked 427 crate engine later this year.
Have your considered a Richmond 6 speed? It lines up perfectly you don't need to cut your floor board. Also you can use the stock driveshaft but you need to swap on a TH400 yoke. I have 10,000 miles on mine and it works perfectly. The Richmond is by no means a Lexus smooth shifter but then again not too bad as my mom loves driving my car everywhere and she is 60 years old!!! You can hear the 1st & 2nd gears a little becuase of the way the teeth are cut, but again it ain't a Lexus...its a Corvette.
I'm pretty sure that with the LS engine infront (shorterblock) and T56 with a camaro LSX bellhousing it will fit without hacking the floor. We made it happen on a 65 coupe and they have way tighter tranny tunnel... I'm going to fit LS7+T56 in my 79 in the future.

After eading your post the problem my brother in law had was in the driveshaft area. He went with a 3 inch driveshaft and with the SRIII tube frame he had to widen the driveshaft area. The transmission fit OK as did the bellhousing area. The major hacking was in the rear wheel wells for larger rubber.
There are entirely too many people here running six speeds for me to believe that you can't put one in without major surgery.
Me for one. The floor needs to be pounded out a bit around the center of the trans and the shifter area will have to be cut for the larger shifter. But these mods are by no means major, relative to swapping in an LS7.

The trans crossmember requires some modification and the hole for the shifter needs to be opened up some because the shifter comes out a little to the right of the muncie location. The floor should not need any work.
There are ways around the shifter problem that don't require cutting the tunnel. McLeod sells a tailshaft that has the shifter moved over to the left and they also sell an adjustable crosspiece for the original tailshaft. Neither is inexpensive but the cost is relatively small considering the total for the swap.
Just did the test fit in mine, LS1 & T56 into my '77, looks like it will be fine, no mods to the floor. I can let you know further next week.
I have a 4.11 rear gear and am looking forward to fun this summer.

That is going to be an awesome project. Be sure to post lots of pics. What transmission are you planning on using. I want to add an LS to my car and am going to use my 5 speed tremec also.
