Default 1970 Headlight switch replacement.

This looks like its going to be a tough job. Anyone done it before? Whats the best way to go about this? I was thinking about removing the speedo and reaching around to the switch. Suggestions??

It's been a while since I've been in that neck of the woods...

I was thinking other than finding someone with small hands and long arms that you may be able to pull the dashpad out just enough to get to the switch. I think it's held on by only a few screws. Pulling the tach out isn't as easy as you think. It's held on by phillips screws if I remember right. I think that will be just as hard to pull as the headlight switch as they may not be that easy to get to also!

Have fun!

Remove the screws at the side of the dash panel to enable you to pull the dash away, not to hard to break anything. Reach in and push the release button to remove the ****. Use a lrade head screwdriver or something wide enough to turn the headlight bezel/screw and remove it. That is what holds the switch in. Once the retainer screw is out, rewach in and remove the switch. Watch which position the vacuum hoses are in to put back in the right locations. Reverse directions for install.

I find if I lay on my back and wiggle under the dash, I have enough room to get my hand up to the switch. I can then depress the release button to pull the ****/shaft out...

The key is to drop the steering column and loosen the lower dash panel that holds the tach & gauges. You can get to the switch from the top. Not too bad of job after you get your technique down.

While you are in there, look around for a copy of the build sheet, that is sometimes stuck between the speedometer and tach.

I have read of folks with 36 year dash pads like yours that suffer cracks using gentle persuasion such as was described. I would be very careful that you don't crack the material.

I have successfully replaced one on a 73 just by reaching up from the bottom.

Oh yeah, I also took the panel underneath the column off too. There's plenty of room if you do that...
