Default 81 pros and cons

My question is what are the pros and cons about disconnecting the computer on my 81? If I do disconnect the computer, what will I need to change?

There is a Lot that has to be done to dump the computer system: Carb change, dist change, rework the TCC lockup system, etc...
First off, why do you want to do this? You can easily do some regular mods (heads, headers, intake, cam etc) and get 300 ~ 350 out of that car WITH the ECM in place
There is nothing wrong with the stock dist and that is a 650 cfm carb

I was just throwing it around with a friend who's got a 75, but you may have just changed any thought that I may have had.
Thanks!

Almost

I think that the carb is larger than 650 cfm. If everything is working right, the CCC system performs very well.

Has anyone tried using the hypertech chip? I've heard mixed reviews.

I have it and am not sure it made much difference. UKPaul has one in his and says it made a difference in low end torque with other engine mods he made. Overall, it is probably not that important, but for $120, it doesn't hurt. God bless, Sensei

As Sensie said. It gave mine a bit more throttle response & torque at low rpms, couldn't say if it improved performance higher up as I think a dyno would be needed to show it. I'm glad I fitted it but, from reading previous posts on here, it doesn't seem to do a lot if the engine is stock. Whatever you do, DON'T fit a 160 stat if you get a chip (or even if you don't!). This can make the engine run so much cooler that the computer thinks it hasn't warmed up & you'll be chasing all sorts of "problems".

I have the Hypertech chip in my stock 82. I've put it in and taken it out a couple of times. They claim it only has an impact at WOT but I'm not sure. Car seems to have less 'soot' for first few minutes of cold startup WITH the chip but nothing major. Biggest diff I notice is WITH the chip I sometimes get a little bit of valve chatter when stepping on the throttle. They say to run Premium Unleaded (well, I believe they say 92 octane or higher.....I've used octane additives as well).

For just normal driving, cruising probably makes no difference but I decided to leave mine in.

Thanks everyone! I think I will just leave it stock for now. It's my wife's car and she's just happy that she gets more compliments on her C3 than I do on my C4. Oh well. Thanks again for your input.

I have the hyperchip in my mostly stock 82 and there is very little noticeable differance. The car shifts at higher RPM and shifts stronger and has a bit better throttle response but that is about it.

The hyperchip is for the ECM and the ECM doesn't control the shiftpoint or the shift firmness. The shiftpoints and firmness are controlled by the TV cable (trottle valves in the 700R4).

Greetings Peter.

Im just saying the differance that I noticed once I change the chip. Thats all. and the car seemed to shift at a higher RPM and bang harder when shifting.
