If a 454, with automatic trans, was balanced witha particular flywheel and then that flywheel needs to be changed, does the engine need rebalanceing? Are all the 454 flywheels balanced the same and all I need to due is buy another flywheel and put it on?
As long as your flywheel ITSELF has 'zero balance' it should be OK. In your case you're talking about an automatic which uses a FLEXPLATE which is not normally included in the engine balancing process as would a FLYWHEEL so a direct swap would not be a problem.
Just a little note here. A 454 is "externally balanced", that is there are weights on both the balancer on the front AND on the flywheel/flexplate. If the engine was balanced "internally" then you need to use a flexplate for an internally balanced engine.
They're easy to identify- there will be a weight welded on the flexplate..

Make sure you get a flexplate for a 454 ... a sbc400 also has a counterweight & it will fit a 454 BUT it will NOT balance right ... get a flexplate specifically for 454.
Do NOT get a zero balance flexplate or flywheel for an OE 454.
You can get one at local parts store ... you don't need anything special ... just a replacement-type flexplate for a 454.
