Default 1982 and the Catalytic Converter..

Not sure I'm going to do this but wondered about the impact of removing my catalytic converter. I haven't even looked underneath but will. Any impact on the computer? Is it as easy as just putting in a bypass pipe? Any other considerations?

Thanks.

Check your local emissions laws. Some states test exhaust to pass inspections to register the car. By taking out the CAT, you may make it difficult to register your car.

It shouldn't affect the computer at all, but others may know better. I would suggest cutting it out, and replacing it with a new pipe to take up the section.

In Atlanta my 1982 no longer needs emission testing. Was mostly curious about any impact on computer, emission controls. Last time I did anything like this was with my 1979 Z28, in 1979.

I have read that you might need to go with a 3 wire O2 sensor so it will maintain high enough temperature for proper closed loop operation.

Your exhaust will be noticably more smelly without the cat. Id get a new high flow cat to replace your older probably partially plugged cat.

No computer issues for drivability other than you might be running more rich due to open loop operation.

Better flow. Lots of weight savings.

Im in Atlanta also....No more inspections! I am running 2" duals into a very small high flow cat and out through flow masters the cars is very loud and yes the exhaust fumes will knock you out in the garage. I am also thinking of doing away with the cat completely. The o2 sensor is located in front of the cat on my car. With that being said I dont hink in y case that it will affect the computer at all. BTW what part of ATL are you in? Im on the Northside up 400..

the cats used in 1982 were very restictive .the new types are much better.the old cats can be opened up with no problems for the computer.with a cleaned out cat or a new type cat ,the car will be a little louder .

Removed both my cats on my 82 over the weekend and so far all is well - gets in and out of closed loop okay. I have duel exaust and had these duel cats on the car when I bought it, also have flowmasters and now the car is much louder, but I like it for now. I still have emmissions in AZ but have 6 months before the next inspection; by then I will install a new duel system with headers and a highflow cat. Gotta hate these inspections!!

I have heard you need what is called a "heated O2" when removing the cat. Someone mentioned 3 wire which may be another word for "heated".

Mostly.

I don't think that the O2 sensor will need to be changed. I ran my 81 for a while without the cat and it ran fine in closed loop. The sensor is a fair ways upstream from the cat ad seems to heat up sufficiently even without the back pressure.

It was a little smellier as well. A high flow cat, though pretty expensive, will work great.

Get a high flow cat, they cost about $60 each from Summit, most folks pay more for their mufflers.
