Can anyone tell me anything about a vortec head casting #12558060? Looking at a used motor. How do I find info on this?
Any help would be appreciated.
Doug
Just type in the numbers in either Yahoo or Google and hit search.
You will get access to many sites.
Actually doing this last fall is how I found this forum.

casting numbers are only half the story the application it was used inis the important part.........the vortec heads for trucks had hardened exhaust seats which don't flow as well.
What exactly do you want to know? The Vortecs are some of the best flowing stock heads that you can use for a mild to medium build. However, you cannot use a large lift cam without some machining, and most people recommend pulling the pressed in studs in favor of tapped in studs.
They also have a good combustion chamber design and an advertised 64cc combustion chamber. The stock heads have 1.95/1.5 valves, but you can machine them for 2.02/1.6 valves.
They are all truck motors. The 906 casting is the ones to avoid so you are good. The block is also a roller cam block so you can upgrade to a bigger cam. The heads can only take about .480 lift without machine work but you can buy the tools to do it at home for about $80. A machine shop would charge about the same. The heads alone are worth about $250 so if its a cheap motor, ****** it up!

I agree there is a lot of misinformation out there. Here is what I have learned in my vortec build. The casting numbers are 060,062,906 The 060s are the GM replacement part. The 062s were on the 1500 trucks. The 906s are on the heavy duty trucks.
The 060s and 062s are the exact same. They have standard seats and 3 angle valve jobs on the intake and exhaust. The 906s are identical in all aspects except for the valve seat. It is the the same diameter but is deeper in the head and has on one angle. The intake on the 906s are still 3 angle.
The 906s can get a 3 angle valve job on the exhaust and a bolw bend and flow the same as the other castings. All the ports are 170cc on all the castings. Hope this helps, Justin
