Default Tach and light switch wiring??

I have a strange thing going where when I adjust my dash light brightness with my light switch, my tach goes nuts. If I turn the dash brightness all the way down then my tach will work again.

Any suggestions? I hope this is kind of a common problem and easy to troubleshoot.

Let's start with the basics. Fill out your profile. What is the car, year?

Noone minds offering help, but it's a bit pointless to offer wrong info. THere's so many differences between years anything offered would be a WAG.

Without knowing the year of your car I would guess its the connector at the back of the circuit board for the tach and speedo cluster. I suspect you have an electronic tach...runs off the distributor. There are copper strands in the circuit board...each on powers something different. If the connector pin is touch the copper strand for the cluster lights and feed for the tach at the same time (it shouldn't) it would cause that problem.

Bad ground. Check the ground from the light switch to the frame pillar.
