I have heard that unlike their small block counter part, the big block Vortec heads are not good for any kind of performance. I was wondering, if the heads were already present...what could be done to them to increase their performance? Things that a machine shop could do. Thanks.
if those are the peanut heads only thing you can use them for is
huge paper weights or at the end of your anker chain on your boat.
The older oval port heads are very good can be found everywhere
for little money and if you want to make them a really good head
put the 219/188 valves in them. oval port, 219/188 valves= good
automatic street car heads for little money.

They have the best exhaust port of any production head, period. They're not peanut ports, their ports are between the peanut and the 781's. Big valves hurt flow, the chamber is too close to the valve. They have 100cc chambers which gives reasonable compression with flat top pistons. You can grind the swirl ramp out of the intake port and give yourself a few cfm's. They'll support 500hp with slight mods. They are better for lower rpm engines but can be made to work well as a performance head.
