Hi guys, have a question on the driveshaft? Installing a 700R4 in my 74.
Some one gave me this information and would like to know if it is correct.
As for the driveshaft, just buy an 82 shaft or the alu one from an early C4..it should be a direct fit.
I dont want to cut my shaft as it is OEM but nothing on my car is. I just KEEP all the parts I take off as it was originally.
In order to mount the transmission, buy a '82 vette tail shaft cover, they might still be available from a Chevrolet dealer for around $40.00. You should be able to use the '74 TH350 cross member to mount the tail shaft. You will need to drill 2 new holes behind where the TH400 would mount. I used a '82 vette TH700 rubber mount, it's a bit taller than the TH350 rubber mount . Relocate the E-brake pulley mount since the TH700 is longer than the TH350 and the yoke would have touched the E-brake cable. To cut the driveline to the correct length, measure from the tail shaft rear seal to the center of the u-joint cap and deducted 3/4". This left me adequate room to install the two piece yoke into the transmission and install the drive line. I cut the driveline by around 3 1/2". You will need to removed the old brake light switch from your '74 and installed a ganged brake light switch /TCC- shift interrupt switch. A 4th Gen Camaro Switch should slips right into the '74 brake switch bracket. You can installed a 4 speed automatic shifter conversion kit from Ecklers ( P/N-34800). This kit will adapt the old TH350 cable to 4L60E and change the detents on the shifter and display the overdrive indicator.
Good luck,
Dan

Bud,
Your '74 was fitted with a TH400 at the factory and I have read on here that the TH200-4R has the same overall length as the TH400 and therefore you can use your original tailshaft. Also the read trans mount will fit in the same position on the crossmember as the TH400 one.
Unless you have already purchased the TH700-R4, then at least ask some questions about the 200.
You cannot use an 82 driveshaft in an iron diff car (68-79). You could use it with an aluminum diff car 700R4 conversion, 80-81 and of course 82.
I am pretty sure GM is long sold out of 82 tailhousings. Somebody like Phoenix? was selling 1 that will work. If you get a tubular crossmember from BowTie you don't need that mount anyway, it uses the holes in the case just behind the pan. C4 700R4s are not drilled and tapped there.
but for a 200 4r install the shaft is stock length with a THM350 yoke...same splines as a 200/700 tranny....the 400/muncie took the larger output shaft....
IMO, and I switched form an olde tyme early on 10 years old 700 swap and put in a 200 4r, and am much happier for the switch....much better suited to the car.....I have a warmed up SBC....
