Hey guys, what do you use to repair body damage on fiberglass body parts. I've worked with "bondo" before. What do you use on a vette? Is it as easy to work with?
I used short strand fiberglass filler, soaked the cloth used for fiberglass repair with it, applied to the backside of the hole/crack, filled the area in with evercoats vette panel filler, and sanded. I hear ecklers guide to fiberglass repair is a great reference.
Eckler's book is excellent. Later model C3's are made of Sheet Molded Compound (SMC), and you probably ought to use SMC resin rather than the cheap stuff you'll find at the auto parts store. I've always heard you should use fiberglass matting rather than fiberglass cloth, because the pattern of the cloth tends to rise through the paint, but others here have argued that that's BS.
Fiberglass work is very similar to drywall repair. Buy good quality resin and glass mat. One of the keys is to feather back several inches on both sides of your repair area and build in layers. Be aware of air bubbles. Wax paper and clay come in very handy for sculpting. Just remember Bondo is only for cosmetics. The less bondo or filler needed the better your glass work!
Good luck
Thanks for your help, guys. However, after checking prices..... it sounds like it will be cheaper to replace the part and just have it painted.
As long as you realize that you will still probably need to do some body work to make the new panels, or whatever, fit correctly. Doors are a prime example of having to rework the edges. Fenders can be just as bad. Let's not even talk about front/rear bumper pieces - a lot of fitting required....
