I am currently shopping for a '73 coupe. I know the '73 was the only year with the soft body-colored nose and chrome rear bumper, however I have seen a few ads for '73's with chrome front bumpers. Is it possible that the ads are mistakes and the car is actually a '72 or earlier? Or did some '73's come with chrome front bumpers? Or...can you put a chrome bumper on the front of a '73? Sorry I have no pictures to back up my claim, but the ads occured in print advertisements and not over the web. Thanks for your help!
No chrome front bumpers for 73. Only the rubber. Would have been illegal to sell a 73 with the chrome bumper as the new rubber bumper was required to meet Federal crash standards.
Yes, if you throw enough money at it then it would be possable to put a chrome front bumper on, just replace the entire front clip.
Tom, do you know if the feds made the rule for the front in 73 , then the back the folowing year? I guess my question is what caused the 73 to be a one year run only????

yep, the rear crash standards went into effect for the 74 model year.
Ha! I got into this SAME arguement with a salesment at a used car lot. They had a pretty heavily modified pre-72 vette that they were selling as a '73. I was interested in the car (it's was a nice car at a great price -- non original big block, fender flares, fat old tires -- I was going to get it as a project car) -- but they kept insisting it was a '73. I told the guy I didn't think he was lying, just that he was incorrect. I DIRVE a '73, I told him, and no way they added a chrome bumper and removable rear glass to a '73. Well, he got really rattled about this so I said, "OK, bye!" I was going to get the car but if he was going to be a jerk...
