Default Rear End "noise".

Ok, when replacing the rubber bushings in the rear of the car (diff, sway bar, strut rods) and reworking the brake calipers, I got this scathingly brilliant idea. There on my shelf was a complete 3:70 posi rear differential. Had run it once on my old race car.

Thought it might be fun to take the 3:08 diff out and put a little gear in the car for some around town fun.

Finished the job up today and I can say that it certainly changed the overalll feel of driving the car. First gear is pretty short now and the big thing I am noticing is that I can actually hear the rear gears under mild acceleration. Was wondering if this "Gear Noise" is common with lower gear ratios? I havn't driven this sort of thing for 15 years. You don't notice any noise when you are just cruising or coasting, just during mild throttle applications.

I understand that the pinion is turning a whole lot fast now along with the driveshaft and such. So is the increase in gear noise normal?

Thanks for your help.

Bob

Lower gears are a little noisier but I would do a fluid change and add the posi additive. A lot funner isn't it!

Not normal. If it's an old unit you may have a bearing noise but sounds like gears. Hard to tell without hearing but if you hear it loud enough without really listening for it then it will not go away.
