Default Shorted Out Starter Solenoid?

Hi, I just had my starter rebuilt and when I tried to start the engine the starter motor kept running, with the key in the off position, I had to disconnet the battery, maybe the solenoid is shorted?

sure sounds like that but to be sure make sure the inboard purple wire on the starter has no voltage with key in run position

I believe I did that and I checked it against another solenoid, and the R and S terminals read shorted on the bad one and open on the other solenoid.

Sometimes they just stick. When you hit the key it puts a hot on the S terminal anf that pulls in the plunger on the solenoid, the solenoid closes the motor contact and turns the starter. If the solenoid is not installed on the starter correctly or the linkage is not put together the plunger will stick in the bore and keep the motor contact closed. That will of course keep the starter motor running because there is a battery lead on it. Remove the starter andlook it over, something mechanical is usually what makes it do that. If the solenoid was "Shorted out" it would have blown a fuse or fuse link.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to take it back to who rebuilt it and let them fix it.

Well, I took the starter down to AAA Auto Electric where I had it rebuilt and Tommy got right on it, and yes the solenoid went bad and he swapped it out and bench tested it and then I installed and my 1971, it fired right up, now if I can find a solenoid shield for my 1970 (NCRS Top Flight canidate) I would be very happy!
