timing mark question
My son and I bought a 76 with a salvage title to tinker on - and so he can learn. The engine is out of a '73 camaro as far as I can tell. It looks like the HEI from the original 76 was transplanted on this engine.
It starts and idles ok - engine is very weak driving around feels like the timing is very retarded..
I went out to set the timing tonight and the indicator line is about a half an inch to the left of the timing marks. I am guessing that the ring on the harmonic balancer has slipped? I can see from the back of the balancer that the rubber is definately trashed.
Until I get the harmonic balancer replaced - If I pull the #1 spark plug and find TDC then mark the pulleys at the 0 deg. mark - that should work right?
The pulleys are mounted to the part of the harmonic balancer that is bolted to the crank shaft - right?
What should be the timing at idle with the vacuum disconnected - somwhere between 8 and 12?
