After getting lots of advice and suggestions from forum members I have decided to replace my current L48 bottom end with a rebuilt 350 shortblock with flat top pistons.
Any suggestions on the specs I should be looking for and most importantly the names of reputable vendors would be greatly appreciated. Are there any forum members that do this type of work?

Do you have a budget? There are a lot of really good GM short block crate motors available ranging from low to high prices. Here's a good example.
Thanks for the info. That configuration is more than I need.
All I need is the block, and a balanced rotating assembly with flat tops to get me around a 10 CR with 64cc heads. I already have the cam, intake, heads, timing set, etc...
Most of the shortblocks I have seen online that are just the block and rotating assembly have been around $700-$1000. I am just not comfortable buying without the benefit of a recommendation from a forum member.

Reason: typo
No problem. Have you considered having your current block machined and balanced with new parts? A local machine shop can do all the work or split the work with you.
I find that's almost more fun even than buying a short block assembled.

I have considered that but I was thinking of just pulling the original motor and putting it away. I could then install my new top end components on the shortblock in my garage without having to teardown the original. Since I am replacing the entire top end and bottom end it just did not seem to make sense to also tear the motor down.
TheEnginestore or MandRengines - they sell on Ebay.
Keep in mind that a 383 shortblock (or a 396) is not much more expensive than the 350 ....
Many people have told me that but I have consistently found that the 383 shortblock is at least 50% more expensive. If you know of a place where this is not true please let me know.
You can only con a greedy man. Buyer beware of the deal that is too good to be true. Has anyone bought from this vendor? There have been other companies from AZ that have produced junk!!!!!!
I bought a set of 1970 LS6 heads from him a year ago. My engine builder pulled them apart and checked the work before install ing them and they were flawless. Top shelf work!

MandRengines have a 383 shortblock with cast crank on Ebay, they sell for $1500. Look at the parts that are included.
If somebody offers a 350 or 383 for $750 it has to be junk.
Here's the parts that you need:
block, machined and cleaned -> $700
cast crank $200
rods $200
pistons $150 hyper, $400 forged
timing chain set and cam $250
labor/assembly ???
I think $1500 is very reasonable for a 350 or 383, there is no signifficant differance in the $$ for the crank.
I think it's hard to beat www.dixiemailorder.com. They are a rep for Wheeler Power Products. Here's one of their race prepped 355's that a good friend is running and it is extremely strong with his Holley Systemax II kit.

Reconditioned means "stock" rods - I'd ask how much they charge for an upgrade.
"fully decked" wtf ??? Is it decked to 9.000" or .005" (+/-.002) off the stock deck ???
cast rings ?? I'd upgrade to CrMo rings.
Now it's not $1399 but $1699.... now the 383 is more attractive
Not trying to be a smarta$$.... take your time, be patient.... there are good deals, there are many rip offs..... be patient

Yeah you're pretty much right there. They do offer all the nice upgrades in their "sportsman" series. BUT, stock rods are fine for "most" people. The stock deck height is 9.025 - Decking to 9.0 makes for added compression and a better baseline to make further calculations from. Deck height is the distance between the flat "quench" surface of the piston and the top of the bare cylinder (no head gasket). Typically an engine is set to zero deck height with the head gasket (compressed value) defining the "squish band" value. If the value is negative this indicates the piston's "quench" surface extends above the top of the bare cylinder.
Right again about the 383 being the better choice.
