On my 74 starter, does the large terminal have one small wire going to it along with the large battery cable ? is the other small wire that goes on a large bolt a ground ? I know where the two tiny wires go but not sure about the other two smaller wires with large terminals. I asume the cloth covered wire goes with the battery cable the other is black and i would asume thats a ground?
This is too important to mess around with...pictures would help, also buy the wiring diagrams from Doc Rebuild. Remember also that a lot of Bubba could have happened in 30+ years, especially on "wear parts" like a starter and wiring.
Fire danger, as well as easy to ruin starters, solenoids, fusible links.
Usually a small diameter cloth covered wire (often yellow), is a return wire to the coil, I believe on the solenoid terminal marked "R".
Grounds are almost always black, but there is a dark hot wire with a large terminal end (blower motor?), in the same vicinity, almost started my car on fire when hooked to the starter/ground.
Photos would help but...
There should be a smaller black wire with the large lug which should be grounded to the outboard starter retaining bolt.
It provides grounding for your fan, wipers, and TCS relays along the rear of the engine harness.
A little better look revealed one was red and one was black, seems like i rembember the black one being on a bell houseing bolt with a wire bracket. It all came back to me right after i broke the ear off the starter! Hay that"s one way of getting a new sylonid By the way who is doc rebuild?
www.docrebuild.com, great supplier in general, specifically has laminated wiring diagrams that are better and easier to use than anything else available
