There are many threads on installing the shut-off valve. I haven't done it becasue I have AC, but the guys here who have done it seem satisfied.

New heater cores are readily available for about 70bucks.

Heater cores generally are throw away. Doc Rebuild has good ones. A little pricey, but they are the hardest things to change. Relatively speaking.

Thanks for the link, B2B, But I gotta say,
Please change your avatar. Every time I see it I keep trying to smooth my hair down till I realize it's not my reflection.

Its been my experience that the new cores, regardless of manufacture, all seem to have poorly formed supply tubes. When you install them the saddle clamp that holds the tubes in place stresses the tubes. I ended up taking the original Harrison core to a shop and had it recored. It was about the same cost as new a AC Delco but a better part.
