Hey all, long time no talk to. I got a no A/C no PS car with the shorty water pump belt. Anyone got any tricks for getting a brand new one on? I'm thinking of taking the plugs out so I can turn the motor over by hand and try and track it on that way. Any other idea's?
Did this just the yesterday. If you can get the belt started on about the first third of the pulley on the pass side of the pulley then you can bump the engine over & it should go in.
On my car the a/c has been temp. removed so I decided to run a belt just from the crank to the w/p seeing as if the alt belt failed I'd loose my water pump also, not a good thing. Guess what, yesterday about ten miles from my house I threw the alt belt, had I not had the other belt I would have been stranded. Had pleanty of battery to get home. So glad I did that.
BTW what size belt are you using there? I had to just trial & error & the one I have is a little tight.
Thanks
Thanks. The new belt is NAPA 25-7320. It was the closest they had that would size match the original but does seema tad bit smaller. I will try the bumpover trick tomorrow. Need to connect the battery. That does seem a lot easier that trying to crank it by hand.
If you are talking about the belt that runs between crank pulley to the water pump pulley only, NO DON'T DO THAT.....
Remove the 4 nuts holding the fanclutch on then remove fan, all you have is the water pump pulley left, slide it off the water pump studs, install new belt on crank pulley and next put the belt on the water pump pulley, next slide the water pump pulley with the new belt on onto the water pump studs, it takes a little bit of fideling to get it on and next install fan clutch and the 4 nuts back on you are done.....

Green76, Why do you think bumping it over is a bad idea? What harm could it do? I tried what you suggested with removing the fan and pulley but cannot get enough updward pressure on it to get it back over the studs. Any special trick to that?
I could'nt get mine to go that way either, so I had to use the "bumping method. Done it several times & hasent seemed to have any bad effects.
Bluthundr-- I just added that belt recently & like I said above it saved my butt the other day. Lose your alternator you are still good for a little while, lose your water pump & you are dead in the water. I'll post the number on the belt in a bit. I think it is a little too tight, but it is the closest I could come up with.
First of all it should not be that hard to install that water pump pulley with the right belt, as far as forcing the belt over the pulley I'm afraid it could distort / bend a pulley, maybe not who knows also you could damage the cords in the belt.
Here is the belt I'm using on my 76 Vette:
"Gates Belt GAT 7325" (water pump to crank pulley).
"Gates Belt GAT 7525" (Altenator, water pump and crank pulley).
"Gates Belt GAT 7360" (Power steering to crank pulley).
It also says on my receipt for all 3 belts "Automotive XL V - Belt"
Here is the outcome. When I tried the bump method, it went on but twisted under the crank pulley and would not work itself back out. So I took off the fan and WP pulley, and removed the two upper most fan studs. I as then able to coax the pulley onto the the two bottom studs enough to get nuts started on them. Then used a ratchet wrench alternating nuts. The pulley seated right up into place and then I reinstalled the upper studs and fan. Took no more than 10 mins. (Duh).
The 25-7320 actually fit's quite nicely on the water pump. The 7530 I got for the alternator however is a tad too big. Thanks for the Napa chart Noonie. Looks like 7520 for the alternator.
