Default Delco Starter Re-install: Where Does Ground Cable Go?

Team,

I finished installing my rebuilt Delco starter in my 79 L82. Before I removed it the grounding cable ran from the frame to the starter body...it was attached to the long stud that the starter bracket attaches to at the rear of the starter motor. I was looking in the AIM for torque specs and it shows the grounding cable running from the frame to the top of the support bracket that is attached to the block. Is there any reason why attaching to the block would be preferred over attaching the cable directly to the starter body, or vice versa? It's not in the way of the exhaust or the idler arm when attached directly to the starter motor, but i'm thinking of following the AIM and attaching it to the block just because...thoughts?

Thanks, Steve

I suppose it could. I have always used the stock position with a star washer for good contact. As long as the engine is bonded to the frame, I would imagine it's there just so it stays/is connected without involving the starter. Don't forget the starter harness also has a ground wire that goes to the bell housing bolt behind the starter.

This is original on a 79. Cable should go to the starter support bracket bolt. As long as there's a good ground it shouldn't matter where you hook it up, tho. My black 79 with headers I had to move the ground cable to the front of the motor near the fuel pump.

remember the ground for the heater/ac blower motor grounds to one of the starter mounting bolts, if that ground is mistakenly hooked up to the starter sylonoid the blower will only run when the key is off! it back feeds somehow, it will not run full speed, low is more like it but it runs, i had the engine builder do this and then tell me how my blower motor went out, i re-connected it to the starter bolt and it worked again, a common mistake for a person not familiar with c-3's

Perfect...I'll follow the AIM and attach it to the block. Any critical prep steps I need to take? I cleaned the point where the starter bracket bolt attaches to the block with brake cleaner/degreaser, then polished it with steel wool. Any need to wire brush it down to bare metal? Dielectric grease?

Thanks for the great pic.

Sounds like you got it cleaned up pretty good. Calls for a star washer under the cable eyelet.
