Default Which mini-starter should I get

Want to get a mini hi-torque starter from Summit Racing (have a gift certificate for $250).

Which one will work the best in a 75 Vert with stock exhaust and "a little sweetened" 350 cid (mild cam and hypereutectic pistons).

Been having hard hot starts (see previous posts) and decided to go with a new mini starter....Any assistance/experience will be appreicated. Also, is mine an inline or staggered installation???

Unless there is nothing else you want from Summit (), just go to to your local NAPA (or whatever) and get GM#12563829 stock replacement starter for 95-99 GM 1/2 ton truck w/168 tooth flywheel, and a pair of GM#12338064 starter bolts. It's a 'mini-starter' with plenty of oomph for a smild small block.

I had a Hitachi mini-starter put in when the last one died. I like it, and it's worked well the last month or so.

OK, so what kind did you get? Model? Inline or staggared installation? What model works the best?

I ended up buying Hitachi that I have not even tried to install yet so I dont know if it wil even fit? Any way its been discussed before I guess it depends on what you currently have now 153 or 168 and staggered or straight bolts. I have read that the GM are better but I dont really know! I have also read the size of the nose on the existing starter matters , And that is where my problem lies it seems that when bolted in the gear would never even come close to the flywheel

I know what you mean. I read different replys...some say staggard install and some say inline install. I do feel comfortable saying that we have a 168 tooth fly wheel......where would someone find out?? Both about the number of teeth on the flywheel and the bolt pattern.....

This ebay seller usually has great deals on mini starters (under $100 delivered to your door). I have them on both of mine, and have had no problems. Why waste money? BTW, both straight or staggered will work. Your block is drilled for both. God bless, Sensei

Manual or automatic? If you look in any book they always list 2 part #s
I have a manual and know that stock starter has a larger nose, the mini I have has a small nose and I think thats why it wont reach the fly wheel. However now I will confuse the issue the hitachi has no nose at all just the gear

inline and staggered should both work if you have the stock block still. Its drilled for both. I have the gmpp 12361146 its barely smaller than the stock starter though. I know the hitachi is a lot smaller (which means easier to install among other things). I actually had one that I returned because I thought it wasnt working, but I'm pretty sure I was just being a knucklehead because I didn't understand how the starter works. It looked like the starter gear was too far away from the flywheel, but I didn't know the starter gear shoots out to crank over the engine then it retracts. (I felt pretty dumb when I figured this out.) the hitachi was cheaper too

The shop that put mine in said it had to be shimmed slightly, although I haven't crawled under to do a complete inspection.
