I installed a new 330 lb VB&P Rear Monospring on my 79 (small block). If I drive over a dip in the road at highway speed, the rear end bottoms out. I wasn't sure at first, but then I filled the tank and had a passenger in the car and the car bottomed out much more noticeably this time. I do not have the Bilstein shocks, just some standard issue shocks that were replaced about 2 years ago. The car never bottomed out with the old style steel spring. So waddaya think?
I am embarassed to admit that I do not know how many leafs were in my old steel spring. I consulted with the folks at VB&P and they recommended the 330 lb. spring.
You definitely need different shocks with the fiberglass spring.
different maybe.
but shocks wont help much with bottoming out. shocks only control the springs movements, and wont help much with adding strength to the spring
did you use your bolts from the old spring??? or the long bolts that came with the new mono spring??? i have a 79 with the mono spring and i dont bottom out.

I replaced my rear spring with the same VB&P Monospring this past fall and had the SAME problem. If I had it to do over, I would have gone with the next stiffer rear spring and the Bilsteins. I crawled under the car to see where it was bottoming and it was hitting on the threads of an exhaust U clamp. So I turned the U clamps so the threads were all facing up (this gave me about another half inch), I put more air in the tires to 30 lbs and I raised the rear of the car by 1/2 inch. Seems to have solved the problem. I'll know more in the spring when I start driving the car again. Try that stuff.
I ordered a 330 spring from VBP and I got the KYB shocks that are valved for the mono spring,,,,I have not driven it enuf to tell if I have that problem but what I have driven I notice no inkling to botteming out.
When I ordered the spring they went thru the 330 springs and picked me out a heavier rated spring in the 330 range. I wanted something that was performance minded but not a harsh riding spring either.

Thanks for the suggestions, and it's also good to know that I am not the ONLY one experiencing this problem. Did you try contacting VB&P about your problem with the monospring? I e-mailed them yesterday but haven't heard back from them yet.

I did contact them and they did offer to swap the 330 mono for a stronger one ---- but who wants to do that job over again? I'll live with it ---- it's only a "nice day" car and i drive it less than 2K miles per year. It's been my experience that every time I don't replace a part in my C3 with the exact original equptment, I end up doing the job two and three times over before it comes out right. Just my 2 cents
