I was priming my oil system with a hand drill, and I almost burned it up because I ran for about 5 to 7 minutes. I must admit, the oil pump shaft did give quite a bit of resistance, but I do have a HV pump it there. My questions are 1 ) Why don't I see any oil flowing up through the rockers yet? 2 ) Will it be okay to fire the motor as is, or do I need to prime the motor until oil does flow out the rockers? Thanks
When I pre-oiled my engine It did take awhile for oil to come up into the heads. The way I did mine was while I was running the drill with the tool installed I had a buddy slowly rotate the engine with a breaker bar and socket on the harmonic balancer. It is unbelieveable how much resistance will be on that drill to turn the pump. But like I said I bearly got oil flowing into the heads. It will take awhile but you will see it flowing.
Oh Oh Oh, I know that answer to this one!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF you are trying to use one of those store bought oil primer drill attachments, throw it away. Went through same thing. Burned up a drill too. Fellow club member brought over his junk yard made distributor manual handle primer, turned it three times and it was primed. (Old distributor shaft with gears ground off. You can an old shaft and attach it to a drill also.)
The problem is, there is no seal on the drill attachment, it will only oil one side.
Yes, prime system before start, absolutely! Don't come this far to mess it up There are so many things that can go wrong at start up, eliminate this one possible problem for sure!
I use a air pressure engine pre-oiler. Put 5 quarts in, hook it to the oil pressure guage hole and let the air do the rest. It will nearly fill the engine and oil pan. Hit the start button and it`s all done and running
